Santa Barbara’s largest annual celebration is a tribute to Spain, whose flag flew over Santa Barbara from the time of the arrival of Juan Cabrillo, who named the city Santa Barbara and claimed California for Spain in 1524. Spain’s flag flew over Santa Barbara until Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821.
